Joy graduated from Long Beach State with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and Sociology.  She has been the director of Mizuno Long Beach since its inception in 1994.  This year she will be coaching the 18 Mizuno and the 12 Elite teams after taking the 18s team to a bronze medal at Junior Olympics in July of 2005. She also won a silver medal with the 17s in 2003. She has played professionally in Europe, and also has coached internationally in Holland and Spain.  She was the assistant coach for the Youth National Team in 2002, which netted a gold medal for the United States in the NORCECA Youth Girls’ Volleyball Championship.
Joy coached for two years as the 2nd Assistant of the women's volleyball team at Long Beach State, where she also played and was captain of the 1993 NCAA Championship team. She has been coaching girls club volleyball for more than 11 years in addition to coaching at the high school and junior college level.  She coached at LB Wilson and Los Alamitos High Schools, and helped lead Golden West College to two state championships. She has played two years in the Olympic Festival, two years in the NVA Indoor pro league,  two seasons on the Bud Lite 4-person beach tour, and has competed professionally for Martmis Volleyball in Amstelveen, Holland.  
Joy also is a highly sought private trainer, and is certified and has her license in Massage Therapy.  Her brother, Dave McKienzie, is currently playing on the US National team.
